Join the Movement for Waiting Until Later

Smartphones at a young age bring distractions, risks, and mental health concerns. The average child gets a smartphone at just ten years old—far too soon. Join us in delaying smartphone use to protect childhood.

Empowering Parents with delaying access to smartphones

We empower parents to confidently say YES to waiting for the smartphone! The Wait Until Later Community unites families in a collective effort to postpone giving children smartphones until at least the age of 16. Protect your child’s formative years from digital distractions and online risks by delaying smartphone use.

Why Wait?

The pressure to give kids a smartphone early is intense, yet the average age for a first smartphone is just ten years old—far too young for the challenges that come with it. Studies show that early smartphone use negatively impacts children’s mental well-being. You have the power to change this! By choosing to delay, you help create a supportive community that normalizes a smartphone-free childhood.

A Growing Movement

More families across Portugal and beyond are saying no to smartphones for kids, fostering healthier habits and stronger communities. When parents unite in this decision, it significantly reduces the pressure children feel to get a smartphone too soon.

The Reality of Smartphone Use for Children

Smartphones dominate elementary and middle school environments due to unrealistic social expectations. Yet, these devices introduce countless distractions and potential dangers at a time when kids should be engaging in more meaningful activities. Instead of spending time outdoors, reading, or socializing face-to-face, many children spend hours on social media apps and YouTube.

Parents Need Support

It can feel like an uphill battle to resist the growing presence of smartphones in classrooms, social settings, and even at the dinner table. That’s why parents are coming together to set a new standard. By waiting until the age of 16, families can encourage healthier habits and protect childhood experiences.

How It Works

By signing the online pledge, you commit to delaying your child’s smartphone use until at least the age of 16—provided that at least 10 families from your child’s grade and school also pledge. Once the pledge reaches 10 families of your school, you’ll be notified that it’s active, and you’ll gain access to a network of like-minded parents in your child’s grade.

Alternative Options

We understand that some families still want their child to have a way to stay connected. If you need a device for calling and texting only, a basic phone or smartwatch is a great alternative! These options provide communication without the overwhelming distractions of a smartphone, and you can still join the pledge.
